Beach Volleyball in NYC: All You Need to Know

Beach Volleyball in NYC: All You Need to Know

Let’s get something straight: New York City is not the first place people think of when you say “beach volleyball.” But trust me, this city’s got game. From hidden waterfront sand pits to full-blown tournaments on the West Side, there’s a solid community of players, a growing list of spots to train, and more people than ever showing up with sand in their shoes.

So if you’re new to the scene, or just trying to figure out where to play - here’s everything you need to know.

Where to Actually Play Beach Volleyball in NYC

1. Pier 25 — Tribeca / Hudson River Park (Manhattan)

This is the crown jewel. Three pristine sand courts, epic sunset views over the Hudson.
It is not cheap (we paid $100/hour) on the weekend, but if you come with a bigger group it is not so bad.

2. Domino Park — Williamsburg (Brooklyn)

A single sand court tucked into a beautifully designed park right by the Williamsburg Bridge. The vibe here is more relaxed and inclusive. I’ve jumped into games with complete beginners and semi-pros alike - and had a blast every time.

3. Riverside Park South (UWS, Manhattan)

The courts here fly under the radar a bit, but that’s what makes them gold. Less crowded, more locals, and a good place to run drills or just bump around with friends without feeling like you’re in the spotlight.

4. Central Park (Manhattan)

Yes - there are actually sand courts in Central Park, east of Sheep Meadow. They’re not as manicured as Pier 25, but if you’re uptown and jonesing for a set or two, it’ll scratch the itch.
Be aware - when it's busy, you might wait for a long time in line, so just enjoy being in the park :)

Where to Practice & Level Up

QBK Sports — Long Island City (Queens)

This place changed my winter. It’s an indoor beach volleyball facility, so yes, you’re literally playing on real sand under a roof. They run classes, leagues, private training, and open play. Coaches are legit, the community’s welcoming, and it’s the best way to keep your game sharp when it’s 40° and raining outside.

What to Wear

Beach volleyball isn’t just about performance - it’s about style, too. Enter NYVolleyballShop.com: your go-to online store for NYC volleyball lifestyle gear.

They are bringing the vibes with some cool t-shirt, hoodies, stickers and more

Great if you want to rep your love for the game and the city on and off the court.

Always Take it Easy

Rolling around the city with a volleyball can be annoying. It doesn’t fit in your bag, you don’t want to carry it under your arm for 45 minutes, and good luck on a packed subway.

PortaBall is the simple fix. Just clip your ball to your backpack or bike - so you can move through the city hands-free, stress-free.

A small upgrade that makes a big difference in your beach volleyball hustle.

New York City isn’t just a place - it’s a pulse. It’s concrete and chaos, hustle and heart. And somehow, tucked between subway stops and skyline views, beach volleyball found its rhythm here. It’s part of the culture now: a little bit competitive, a little bit scrappy, and full of unexpected magic. So throw on your favorite tee from NYVolleyballShop.com, clip your ball with a PortaBall, and dive into the sand. Because in this city, even the beach plays by its own rules—and that’s exactly why we love it.
